The need arose to create an engaging leadership program that also teaches American History, thus “What Would Harriet Do?” was born.

Harriet Tubman is one of the most well-known names in American history. She was born into slavery but escaped to freedom in 1849. Once she escaped, she devoted her life to helping others flee through the Underground Railroad.

She was a warrior. She was unapologetic. She was a leader.

Who other than, Harriet Tubman, would be a great role model to teach leadership skills?

It seems fitting that we look at the past and embrace it for inspiration. Harriet Tubman fits this category regardless of background or identity.

This African American spiritual leader led more than 200 slaves to freedom through secret routes – all while remaining undetected herself.

So, when we are deciding how we can lead, we can ask a simple question: What Would Harriet Do?

Adriana Smith is an educator. Her defining moment that clarified her path was a morning that has stuck with her since a child.

After oversleeping for school one day, Adriana woke up to bright sunshine and everyone slogging away in their beds. It wasn’t where she should be. In fact, at that very moment, Adriana should’ve been at school learning math. When she asked her mother, who was also in her bed sleeping away, could she still go to school, it was this moment that defined her love affair with education.

Adriana graduated summa cum laude from the University of Florida and with distinction from New York University.

Her dedication to helping others is only matched by her love for education, self-care and travel. She is a leader with over six years in higher education experience, managing and consulting with university professionals and students from around the world about how best handle their unique challenges when studying abroad and engaging in college. Building resilience and taking care of self is at the top of that list!

Her experience transcends studying abroad and travel topics. As a diversity consultant who coordinates virtual events that reach hundreds - Adriana carries an invaluable message: "Redefine Resilience. Embrace Yourself. Impact the World."
